New evidence to help schools know what works in supporting children with a social worker

A new report published by What Works for Children’s Social Care into school-based interventions that show ‘signs of potential’ for children and young people who have needed a social worker. This new analysis offers teachers and school leaders new evidence to help children who have needed a social worker reach their potential and new opportunities to narrow the attainment gap. The report contains a large-scale re-analysis of the EEF Toolkit and identifies ten projects that have larger positive impacts for children and young people who have had a social worker than for their peers.

The Department for Education’s Children in Need Review  (June 2019) found that on average there are three children in every classroom who have needed a social worker over the last 6 years. Experiences of adversity and trauma can cause barriers to education but the right support can help identify and overcome those barriers so children can achieve.

 As they continue to build the evidence base, they are also taking forward other key recommendations from the review to make sure the right support system is in place at a local level to use this evidence and best practice. A consultation launched this week to strengthen the role of Designated Safeguarding Leads in schools so that they have a greater focus on improving the academic achievement of children in need of help and protection, as part of their existing safeguarding duties.
