The Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI) has published a report on social mobility and elite universities which finds that progress in widening participation in elite selective universities has been poor. The report stipulates that it will take nearly a century for highly-selective universities in England to raise the participation rate for 18-30 year olds from the least advantaged areas to the existing participation rate for 18-30 year olds from the most advantaged areas. HEPI recommends that universities undertake a social mobility audit which benchmarks their progress on outreach, access as well as academic and pastoral support for disadvantaged students.
