The Children’s Commissioner for England, Anne Longfield, has published a report on school leavers which finds that since 2015, there has been a 28% increase in the number of children leaving education without 5 GCSEs (grade A* - C) or equivalent technical qualifications. Last year, this figure stood at 100,000 children. The report adds that children in receipt of free school meals are over twice as likely as children not on free school meals to leave school without any substantive qualification - these figures stand at 37% and 15% respectively. The Children’s Commissioner argues that recent education reforms have reversed “more than a decade of substantial progress in reducing the number of children leaving education without substantive qualifications.”
