Department for Education confirms 35 additional EP training places from 2027

01/10/2026

The Department for Education has increased funded training places in England from 204 to 239, with applications now open. The AEP welcomes these additional places. However, the scale of workforce shortages remains a concern as local authorities prepare to deliver SEND reforms, including the proposed ‘Experts at Hand’ service.

Interest in entering the profession is clear 1,766 people applied for last year’s 204 funded places. The challenge is turning that interest into a workforce able to meet demand.

AEP General Secretary, Donna Wiggett commented: “It is encouraging to see today’s announcement of an increase in EP training places in England, reflecting the profession wide call for greater investment in the EP workforce. We welcome the recognition of the vital role EPs play in supporting children, young people, families and communities, and we welcome these important first steps towards building the skilled workforce needed to meet growing demand.

If we are to attract applicants with significant experience of working with children and young people, it is essential that there is a bursary at a level that makes EP training financially viable and accessible. The government must ensure that the financial support available is sufficient to attract the diverse and skilled applicants needed to strengthen the EP workforce and, ultimately, improve opportunities and outcomes for all children and young people.”
