As a trade union and professional body, the AEP is mindful of the impact AI will have within the educational psychology (EP) profession and beyond.
Following ongoing engagement with members, regulators and fellow trade unions, the AEP has published a document summarising principles for EPs when using AI. This document has been developed collaboratively with staff, National Executive Committee and in close engagement with both the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as the regulator of EPs in the UK, and the Trade Unions Congress (TUC).
We are committed to ensuring that AEP members are supported to use these tools safely and effectively, and to enabling the best outcomes for children and young people. We recognise the value of the human, relational and analytical aspects of EP work, and it is important that AI does not replace any part of this work.
In our role as a trade union, we want to ensure that the adoption of AI tools does not negatively affect jobs or workplace conditions, and that AI is used only to enhance the experience and quality of EP work and the well-being of members.
We are aware that technologies are rapidly evolving. This document will be reviewed regularly, and aims to offer a broad set of principles for EPs - to be considered in line with regulator and employer policies.
We welcome any suggestions for developing work around AI in Educational Psychology, for example CPD opportunities or research specific to the field.
