On Thursday, GCSE exam results were published across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. This follows the release of A level and AS level results last week. AEP General Secretary, Donna Wiggett commented: “Congratulations to all those young people receiving exam results. EPs work with young people every day and recognise the hard work, commitment and resilience needed to complete these exams. We also acknowledge the dedication of teachers and the wider education workforce who have supported young people throughout their education.”
“Reliance on exams places considerable pressure on young people. For some pupils, including those with SEND, the experience of assessment can present additional challenges. The contribution of the wider workforce is crucial. Teaching assistants, inclusion staff, SEND teams and specialist professionals such as EPs work alongside teachers to understand and respond to the individual needs of children and young people. Their expertise is crucial in helping pupils to access learning, participate fully in school and develop the confidence and skills they need. We must acknowledge the influence of poverty and socioeconomic circumstances. Regional disparities and the growing, persistent gap between disadvantaged pupils and their peers demand a response from government to ensure all pupils have needs identified early and receive extra support in order to thrive.”
“With a new Cabinet in Westminster, discussions about the future of assessment and education continue. Children and young people need opportunities to demonstrate a broad range of strengths, skills and capabilities, and to receive the support they need to thrive, including those with SEND. Ensuring every young person can fulfil their potential requires investment in both the workforce and the wider conditions for children and young people.”
