Prime Minister appoints Education Recovery Commissioner to oversee catch-up for lost learning

03/02/2021

The Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has appointed Sir Kevan Collins as Education Recovery Commissioner.

In the role, Sir Kevan will oversee a programme of catch-up for young people who have lost out on learning due to the pandemic. The Prime Minister has pledged to work with parents, teachers and schools to develop a long-term plan to ensure pupils have the chance to make up their learning over the course of this Parliament. This work will be led by Sir Kevan, who has worked in the education sector for over 30 years, as a teacher, Director of Children’s Services, and most recently as Chief Executive of the Education Endowment Foundation.

In the role, Sir Kevan Collins will work with the Government to deliver measures to support children who have missed out on face-to-face education, including addressing factors such as curriculum content and quantity of teaching time in the coming months. The Prime Minister has committed to provide a further £300 million for tutoring programmes, building on last year’s £1 billion Covid Catch Up fund, as well as potential plans for summer schools.

Sir Kevan will report directly to the Secretary of State for Education and the Prime Minister. He will consult with parents, teachers and schools as part of his role.
