Cathy Atkinson appointed as Editor of Educational Psychology in Practice Journal

We are very pleased to announce the appointment of Cathy Atkinson as the incoming Editor of the AEP’s peer-reviewed journal, Educational Psychology in Practice.

Cathy is a Reader in Educational and Child Psychology at the University of Manchester and is Curriculum Director of the Doctorate programme there. She is also a practising HCPC registered EP, working at alternative provisions in Manchester and Liverpool, and as an associate for Waite Psychology. Previously, Cathy has been a member of the editorial board of Educational and Child Psychology journal and has extensive experience as both a research supervisor and reviewer. 

Her research interests include the role of the EP in working therapeutically, motivational interviewing, children’s right to play and social justice. Cathy has published extensively about EP practice, with more than 80 publications to her name.

Cathy is incredibly excited about taking on the role of editor of Educational Psychology in Practice, believing it to be the most influential journal for developing and shaping the practice of EPs in the UK. She is very much to working with colleagues, contributors, and the journal board - taking EPiP on the next stage of its journey.

Cathy will officially commence the role of Editor from January 2026, and is currently working alongside journal Editor Stephanie James, in the role of Editor Designate.

AEP Subscription Fees - 2026
As shared in the Honorary Treasurer’s Annual report, the NEC agreed to increase membership fees by 3.5 percent in 2026 to support an increase in expenditure. Fees have remained at the same level for several years, at a time of significant inflation and reduced income and this small increase is necessary to sustain the association's finances.
